Métis Nation Housing Strategy

Canada- Métis Nation Housing Sub-Accord July 19 2018

This sub-accord commits $500 million over 10 years to support the implementation of a Métis Nation Housing Strategy. The MNC Governing Members agree to provide housing programs to address housing needs of the Métis population and to ensure there is adequate, suitable and affordable housing for Métis people.

A Comprehensive Housing Strategy for the Métis Nation (MNC) 2018

This proposal from the MNC provides the rationale for a federal investment in Métis Nation housing in advance of the 2018 federal budget. It includes the Métis Nation Housing Strategy which articulates the vision for the proposed investment in Métis housing initiatives, the application of the investment and expected outcomes as well as the broad principles and processes by which the work will proceed and be governed.

This presentation on the first day of the conference provides background for the housing ministers and officials from the MNC and Governing Members tasked with developing the strategy. It responds to the commitment made by federal Ministers Duclos and Hadju on the eve of the first Crown-Métis Nation Summit in 2017 to work with the Métis Nation to develop a Métis Nation-specific housing strategy and ways of improving Métis access to delivery of affordable and social housing.

Métis Urban Housing Corporation/Métis Capital Housing Corporation

This affiliate of Métis Nation of Alberta provides over 850 affordable housing units across the Province of Alberta in fourteen urban centres: Bonnyville, Calgary, Cold Lake, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lac La Biche, Lloydminster, Medicine Hat, Peace River, Red Deer, Rocky Mountain House, St Paul and Slave Lake.

Métis Urban Housing Association of Saskatchewan Inc.

The Métis Urban Housing Association of Saskatchewan Inc. (MUHAS) was incorporated
in 1992. Five member Corporations provide approximately 1000 units for families,seniors, and singles. The housing types vary by corporations in Lloydminster, MeadowLake, Prince Albert, and  Regina.

Manitoba Metis Federation/Louis Riel Capital Corporation

The First Time Home Purchase Program offered by the MMF through its capital corporation increases opportunities for Metis citizens in Manitoba, to become home owners where they may not otherwise have this opportunity. It is designed to help Metis citizens overcome the challenge of trying to save sufficient funds that financial institutions require for a down payment to purchase a home which will be their principle residence.


Canada-Métis Nation Homelessness Accord June 13 2019

Canada and the Métis Nation have agreed to co-develop a Métis Nation-specific approach to homelessness under the session Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy announced in June 2018 and launched in April 2019. This accord commits Canada to provide funding of $43,104,960  over 9 years to enable  MNC Governing Members to provide services for Métis Nation citizens experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness.
